The Return of Maximus

January 6, 2012

A day of firsts on the 2nd day of the year at Governor Stable.

Climbers: Max, Esten, Priscilla, Arthur

Hydration: Talisker 18, Stone IPA, Lagunitas Sucks, Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout, Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut Champagne, Taittinger “La Francaise” Brut Champagne

Although Governor Stable opened on 1/1, we were recovering for our celebrations and decided to head out on the 2nd day of the new year. The conditions were prime for Max’s first time bouldering outside since his surgery as well as Priscilla’s first visit to GS. And now that GS has an online day pass system, it’s easier for people to visit if they aren’t season pass holders.

Arriving at the boulders, the group started off at the Upstream Arete Area while snacking on the atypical bouldering lunch of Wegman’s sashimi (guy’s this is the new and better Sheetz.) They guys played on the various warm ups while Priscilla found her first project at GS, Glass Arete (V1).  She made good progress on that problem figuring out the first half, but left with a large bruise on her knee from jamming it into a knee bar. Moving on, they headed to Esten’s project, Bread Loaf Arete (V4). While Esten and Art worked on the beta, Max went around the corner to send Bread Box (V1) and Ungreased (V1). After many attempts, Esten finally sent the problem skipping all the holds on the top that Max chalked and instead gracefully humped his way over and when he go back down, he enjoyed a bit of victory champagne.

While sipping the champagne, they headed to their next project down the hill, Cobra (V5), and met up with some of the locals including the co-author of the new GS guidebook, Ryan Shipp. Even while he’s still recovering, Max nearly sent the problem (although he’s sent it before.) Esten made some solid attempts and blew out the rubber on his Solutions. And Arthur didn’t bother since he doesn’t have the arm span to start the problem.

With the day winding down, they decided to move on the Mushroom Cap boulder and along the way decided to stop and play on some of the reachy slab problems on the Whale Boulder where Max sent several of the problems including Beluga Blues (V3) and Minky Mantle (V3) simply because he’s tall and could easily reach the higher holds. Esten managed to make those sends as well, but struggled a bit with them while Priscilla made some solid attempts, but couldn’t quite reach. And like Cobra, Arthur just spotted and hydrated since his shortness was not made for those particular problems.

To wrap up the day, the group headed to Mushroom Cap boulder where Max quickly sent Bella (V3) which had given him trouble last time he visited Coopers. Art made quick work of Mushroom Crack (V1) and Priscilla made some great attempts on her 2nd GS project as the sun set. It was a fun day with projects sent and new projects found and a great start to the 2012 bouldering season (which really is the entire year.)

Here are Art’s photos from that day.
